What do small maps and Samsons have in common?

They really show why radar plays an important part in TA. The 49 metal investment that gives range for the missiles and shows when and where your opponent is about to attack. This demo could be a schoolbook example for Chapter five: the use of Radar, in the allmighty strategy guide to Total Annihilation.

Here we have VP_Snow vs. RawDawgiWIN on Lava Mania. An underplayed map, but Snow seems to know his lava better then iWIN. Snow builds wind instead of solar, a wise choice on this map where metal is hard to find and the wind is decent. Snow expands and cover up metal patches pretty quick, as if he sticks to a gameplan.
iWIN on the other hand, hasn´t been playing this map very much. It shows. He builds expensive solars, and his Samsons are busy keeping flashes away. No offensive moves after the first 2 scouts he sent.

Snow is successful with his flashes, iWIN never see them come. No radar. The 49 M investment that even a great player can forget about. The game could have been very different (and probably less fun to watch) had iWIN built radar early on. Use +view 1 and +los and see the difference.
But iWIN improves under pressure, barely staying alive he starts to regain control. Snow´s flashes make fine wreckages for the growing army of iWIN, and when we enter midgame, the outcome is impossible to predict.

Offensive commanders, new bases, flank attacks. The game turns back and forth. Wreckage piles up and the reclaiming cons struggle to keep the metal income going. Who will be victorious?

I suggest you find out!
